THE GREEN FOOTPRINT PROJECT

BACKGROUND

Our company values the environmentally conscious approach, which influences the planning of our projects, investments, and our organizational culture. We strive to support and reflect with our products and services, investments and with building of our community. An example is the implementation of a circular economic model connected to the semi-finished aluminium and copper alloys products, which are an outstanding part of our product range: Color Metal repurchases, processes, and recycles waste from the processing of semi-finished products. By recycling 1 ton of aluminium, we can save the extraction of 6 tons of bauxite, and thus, we can prevent the emission of 9 tons of carbon dioxide.

 

THE IDEA

At the beginning of the year, when we were planning our Corporate Social Responsibility projects, we discussed pour ideas with the SZKA - Odorheiu Secuiesc Community Foundation. Last year, experiencing our colleagues' enthusiasm about volunteering, helping, organising environmental awareness events and their willingness to set an example, convinced us that we had to continue these actions and even set the bar higher.

 

Therefore, we very much welcomed the opportunity offered by SZKA and the Forestry Office from Zetea, to be the first company who joins and supports their initiative, the Green Footprint project. In doing so, we want to contribute to the neutralization of our carbon emissions, set an example, and encourage other businesses in Odorheiu Secuiesc to join this process.

 

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT

As part of the project, Color Metal funded the purchase and planting of 500 Sweet Chestnut (Castanea Sativa) seedlings, and a group of colleagues with their families volunteered at the first planting on 10th of April. We symbolically “adopted” the first seedlings and chose this growing forest as a hiking spot for our community. An important aspect in the selection of the tree species was the high biodiversity value of the Sweet Chestnut, and long lifespan reaching 200+ years old. These trees, with their edible seeds, also feed the animals of the forest, so due to their characteristics and status, these species will not be chopped down in adulthood.

 

At last Saturday's planting, approximately 200 seedlings were planted by a group of 40 volunteers, whose members consisted of representatives from SZKA, Color Metal and the forestry office, as well as their family members. It was a real teamwork, and we followed specific instructions complete the job right. Since the area was rocky, the first step was to loosen the ground with pickaxes, then dig deeper using a hoe, label the seedling and place it in its designated hole. To protect the seedlings from wild animals, we have set up protective biodegradable walls around them that provide safety for a couple of years. In the next phase of the project, a GPS map will be created which help to track the trees.

 

On the hard terrain, we felt even more proud to see the result of our work. Thanks to the enthusiastic staff of the forestry office, we learnt a lot of valuable new information. We got to know, for example, that the trunk of our Sweet Chestnut trees will reach 40 cm diameter in approximately 80-90 years, and in about 100 years, they can absorb approx. 2000 kg of carbon dioxide. According to our calculations, 2000 kg of carbon dioxide can be the result of driving 16340 km.
